How a group works

What a group evening looks like

Every group has the same shape, so your first evening holds no surprises.

  • Arrive and settle

The room opens fifteen minutes early, with water and tea on the table. Nobody has to talk until the circle starts.

  • The circle

One or two clinicians open with a short skill or a question. You speak when you choose, or you pass.

  • A set ending

We finish on time with a minute of quiet, so no one leaves in the middle of a sentence.

  • Between evenings

If you will miss a week, tell us. A group depends on people coming back, and your seat is held.

In their words

What members say about the room

“I was nervous about sitting in a circle. Nobody asked me to talk before I wanted to, and the room felt calm from the first evening.”

Nadine T.Skills group member

“The clinicians start on time, end on time and remember your name. That sounds small, and it was not.”

Hakeem O.Process group member

“Intake explained plainly what the group is and what it is not, so I knew what to expect when I walked in.”

Kiran S.Transitions circle member

“Parking was easy and the waiting room was quiet. I could breathe before I walked in.”

Dawn L.Process group member

How fees work

The answers to what nearly everyone asks before starting. Each program's fee is given to you in writing before you begin.

  • Insurance we work with

Some of our clinicians are in network with some employer plans, and others are out of network. Which applies to you is confirmed at intake, before your first session. Plans differ on group therapy: some cover it and some do not. We do not bill Medicare or Medicaid.

    • Some employer plans (PPO)

    • Out of network with other plans

    • Medicare and Medicaid are not billed

  • If you pay yourself

If you pay yourself, the fee depends on the program: a 50-minute individual session, or a group of 90 minutes that runs for a set number of weeks. Your fee is given to you in writing before you start. A limited number of reduced-fee spots are held in each group; ask at intake how to request one. HSA and FSA cards are accepted. A group is a commitment to the circle, so we ask you to tell us when you will miss an evening; individual sessions need 24 hours' notice to change.

  • Receipts for reimbursement

Each month we give you an itemized receipt (a superbill) with the dates and kind of session, for a plan that may reimburse part of out-of-network care. It carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see. Your plan decides whether it pays anything, so ask it before you start.

  • An estimate in advance

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of what your care will cost before you start. For a group, the estimate covers the whole series. If your final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

  • Checking your benefits

Our intake coordinator checks your benefits before your first session, including whether your plan covers group therapy, and tells you what the plan says. Coverage is the plan's decision, not ours.

Questions

What nearly everyone asks

Do you take my insurance?

Some clinicians are in network with some employer plans, and others are out of network. Plans differ on group therapy. At intake we check your benefits and tell you what applies. We do not bill Medicare or Medicaid.

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of your care before you start. For a group, it covers the whole series. If the final bill is $400 or more above it, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

Do I have to speak in a group?

No. You take part as much as you like, and you can pass at any point.

What happens in the first session?

It is a 50-minute intake with one clinician. You talk about what you want, we explain how the groups work and what stays private, and you choose a first step together.

Are you licensed where I live?

Our licenses are from North Carolina. By video we see people who are in North Carolina during the session.

What do I do in a crisis?

Call or text 988, any time. In an emergency, call 911. This site and our messages are not monitored around the clock.
